October meeting

October 15, 2015  Guild meeting minutes

President Cindy Gerber-Chavez welcomed everyone. She reminded everyone to pay the $1 or $2 to the center for letting us meet there every month.

Lorri passed out instructions for the quilt blocks we are going to make for our President this year. They need to be returned in November.

Our UQG Rep Sandra John told us about quilt fest and how fun and successful it was. Next year’s theme will be

Christmas. She told us about the Ruby Jubilee for the UQG’s 40th birthday year. Each guild is asked to make a quilt in only red and white. The rules and instructions are on the UQG website. Members can also make their own red and white quilt if they want.

Lorri Bashien told us about the idea she has for our quilt. She will put together kits to make the school house blocks like the ones we made a few years ago. The guild will buy the fabric for her to use in those blocks. This idea was voted on and approved.

Cindy Schmierer shared some tips with us. Small hair scrunchies can be put around bobbins to keep the thread from unraveling. You can use a small ceramic bowl to catch pins beside your machine. They won’t bounce out and it’s not magnetic to mess up your machine.

Leslie Rogers showed us the second to last step for our mystery bag. We are making the inside of the bag and putting the pieces together.  Next will be the handles.

Nickey Greene had us display our “I heard it on vinyl” challenge quilts. They were all great! Diane Miller, Lorri Bashein and Ruth Davis won prizes.

Denise Thalman showed us her completed Easter row quilt top. She told us to do any (or all) of the remaining 2 rows for next time.

Cindy reminded us that we are to make and donate a quilt for our birthday month.

Cindy also reminded us that we are making pincushions for our Christmas party gift exchange. Some could be made with wool and some not because of allergies. The gift bag should be marked if it contains wool.

Vivian Blotter asked if the guild could consider having Sharon Aposhian Wright come to teach us a sew-in project next year. We agreed that would be a good idea. We also discussed the project Emily Bailey will teach us in a class next April. The majority chose her Goldilocks pattern.

Leslie Rogers showed us her “Ott light” finishes. She will also be giving us a trunk show display at our next meeting.

Mary Jo Hansen has the OTT light for November.

UFO #5 is due next meeting.

Cindy Gerber- Chavez told us about our meeting at the Quilter’s Attic quilt store in November. She showed us some projects for the sew-in. The majority chose to do the machine mat. She will email the instructions to Michelle so they can be sent out early and in the newsletter.

Next meeting will be Thur. Nov 19th at 1:00pm at Quilter’s Attic in Bountiful.

Our sew-in will be at 10:00 am, it will be the sewing machine mat taught by employees of the store.

A pattern to be tested and fabrics to be use. Fall leaves to inspire. This quilt in the works had all those inspirations and more. The bonus was being able to work with an amazing designer and friend and lend her a helping hand. Thanks Emily for letting me help you out.

My little helper was in the middle of it all when it came time to lay it out and figure what went were. I think her sweet little spirit was an added bonus to this quilt.

Our home was filled with loads of creating going on. As my daughter Kaytlin made this fun quilt for her boss who had been a good friend and manager. Kaytlin used a take 3 pattern and had her coworkers design the center blocks. She pieced it, quilted it and a coworker bound it for her.

Viv used her sewing in blocks to make this fun wall hanging. Love the fabrics chosen.

Loretta chose to make a wall hanging going a different direction. The embellishments were a bonus for sure.

Michelle took her block and made up a fun pillow to decorate her home with.

Cindy chose to shrink her's down to make up a fun Halloween mini

Our youngest guild member explored while the meeting progressed. A huge thank you goes out to those that help to entertain her so that I could pay some attention.

Leslie is showing us a part of the mystery bag she is making. I love the colors and I'm excited to get started on mine.

A huge thank you goes out to Ruth, Patsy and Lindy for sharing there talents and love to all of us.

We had a challenge quilt with the theme "heard it on vinyl" Our talented ladies in the guild preformed a fun song to start out the voting. Everyone that participated did a fantastic job and put there heart and sole in to it.

Every month we are blessed to have amazing  quilts shown to us. I hope to have a quilt or two finished  to share at show and tell.

Michelle is enjoying her pie and can enjoy it with out the calories.

Denise has her quilt done and shows us all how our Easter quilt should look like when complete. How are your blocks coming along?

Leslie is sharing with us a work of art and a lot of work. What a great way to use up our scraps and she did a fantastic job on putting all those colors together.
