June 2013 Guild Meeting

President’s Message:

What inspires your creativity? Is it a beautiful sunset or a blooming flower? Is it a raging storm or a lush landscape? I often find inspiration while I am shopping. Colors are everywhere. Stores are filled with objects and people. Next time you are at the store any store make sure your senses and visual perception are ready to record some colors, textures, and inspirations on a small notebook in your purse. World markets are great for colors and visual effects. See if you can’t snap a few pictures with your phone or camera of items that might inspire a great idea for a quilt. See if you can’t fill up your visual well and use it through creative expression. I hope some of you were able to attend the shop hop. This is a terrific way to find inspiration and visual excitement. I love walking into any quilt shop and seeing how they display things and how they choose to pair fabrics together for their quilts. This helps us to expand our color pallets and use the fabrics that perhaps we might not be drawn to. Last year’s state fair challenge helped me to use all bold and busy fabrics in my quilt and it is one of my favorite quilts today. Be thinking of some things that inspire your creativity and share them with us at the meeting.

What inspires your quilting? Is the beautiful colors of Sunset or the tile work on a building? What inspires you. At our show and tell this month we were inspired by the creative talent that was shared by those you brought there amazing creations.

Sewing Tips from June Meeting: By Loretta Hunt

©      When hand quilting wear a rubber finger on your index finger. Buy them at an office supply house. or use elastic bandage, wrapped around your finger. You can buy this at Dallas Greens. >They will both act as a needle gripper when pulling the needle through.

©     Paint small craft clothes pins and number them. Use the clothes pins to attach to strips or any thing you need to keep track of pieces in numerical order.
Rolls of shelf paper in 12 inch and 18 inch width or the old type of computer paper, are very useful for designing borders and or quilting designs.

The Ott light for July goes to Lindy Dare, What Ott you be doing  in your life?

Number 11 is the number to complete for the UFO in July how is your unfinished projects pile coming along. Is it growing or slowly going down?

Our July sew in will  start at noon and we will have a luncheon. The theme for the luncheon is summer time. Call Joan Jensen as she has the sign up list. If you didn't sign up bring your favorite summer time dish to share. What is yours an ice cream jell-O salad or maybe a fun batch of cookies that always brings a smile to someones face.

The ladies of the guild shared there inspirations with us as we started our show and tell. Everything was amazing and a job well done goes out to one and all.

Everyone wants a creative grandma like Sue Tubs. As she creates for her little ones and showers them with love.

After two years of faithful service a young man comes home with some interesting ties. Michelle Stay took those ties and created a truly amazing quilt for this young man to remember his years of service as he takes on life's new adventures.

Hats off to the ladies of the Layton guild guild that share not only there love of quilting but there lovely spirits of friendship and love. Until Next month ladies !!

Sewing Tips from May Meeting: By Loretta Hunt

©      When your quilt book won’t stay open to your project you are working on, use your Potato Chip Bag Clip!

©      Do you have the dreaded little humps on your sewing machine? Use a post-it note. Put the post-it note over the hump, but not touching feed dogs. Even better, use graph paper tape on in line with the needle.

©      When you use fusible web or fleece, put a piece of parchment paper (available at the grocery store) either over or under the edges as you iron. The paper prevents fusible edges that peek out from sticking to your iron or ironing board. It will save you a lot of cleanup.

Barns were the show and tell of the day! Everyone is making them thanks to Lorri for sharing her amazing pattern and teaching us. This barn is a fun one to show case our quilting talents.

Lindy found a friend to play with during the meeting. As you can see every ages is welcome at our guild meetings.

In the Crazy quilt of Life I'm gladf you're in my block of Friends.
